What I Did On My Summer Vacation

Antique Wooden Side Chair

This weekend marks the official end of summer. Although the weather has just finally caught up with the calendar, pools will be closing for the season and kids will be back in school on Tuesday. And while I’ll definitely miss the sun setting at 9:00 pm, I am all for cooler temps so those blasted mosquitoes quit attacking me in the garage. Usually about this time, I’d look back over the summer and think about all the things I wanted but never got around to doing. This year, though, that’s not the case. With all the DIY projects that got started {and the handful that were completed}, I’ve been a busy bee. But, it hasn’t been all work and no play. Ooh, trust me I’ve played.

Mid June, we enjoyed a week-long family vacation in California and I met my first blogging pal in real life. I was home for a day before hopping a plane in the opposite direction to wrap up the Blogger Showdown challenge in New Jersey. Along the way, I stopped off to hang out with a new pal in New York. He was working at a school-yard-turned-flea-market and invited me to come spend the day with him. No way was I going to turn down that opportunity.

Manhattan Flea Market

Even though it was crazy hot, I walked the entire place twice. I immediately fell in love with these upcycled chairs.

Reupholstered Chairs

And began to appreciate the draw of shabby furniture finishes (although I wasn’t feeling the inflated price tags). It was a good thing I was limited to what I could fit in my carry-on or I’d have been in serious trouble.

Lane Storage Chest

I wound up buying a vintage Ball canning jar, some large metal chargers and two wooden finials. Oh, and I picked up some cute miniature ceramic elephants to add to my ever-growing collection. As I shopped, I regularly checked in to see what my buddy David had going on.

David Dall

You might remember me posting this photo. Some people thought he was my brother and while we do look alike a few keen observers noticed the mic on his collar. While I was scouting the goods, he was busy moving furniture into the booths and keeping the crew in check…

…so that selling would begin promptly at 10:00 am.

Sell Day Prep

Since it didn’t work out for me to spend the day working on projects with him in the shop, I got to hang out while they taped the teams selling the finished “flips” at the flea market. There were four teams set up in two different spots and they were serious about keeping the projects under wraps (mover-grade blankets to be exact) until show time.

Flip Team Intro

I didn’t know what to expect, really, when it came to the filming of a tv show. I’m not sure if it surprised me more how ‘in their face’ the camera crew got or how unfazed the other vendors were that there was a camera crew on site. I tried to stay out of the way but couldn’t help but feel like a bit of a stalker as I snapped these behind the scenes pics for ya’ll.

The crew was pretty nice but seemed bored a lot of the time. I suppose for them it was just another day at the office. There were these two girls with clipboards and it was their job to track down anyone who might have been on camera and have them sign a release form. Most of the shoppers had no clue a television show was being filmed (not a single truck or t-shirt mentioned the show’s name or network affiliation) and a few were quite startled when they were suddenly surrounded by camera men and the big boom mic.

Lara Spencer

Halfway through the day, Lara Spencer showed up to tape the intro segment. *SPOILER ALERT* – I was a little perturbed that a few items had already been sold by the time she urged the teams to ‘get out there and get selling’ but I guess that’s just how reality tv works. After she filmed her spot, she ran off to shop a few of the nearby booths. No one seemed to notice there was a celebrity in the house er, playground. Either that or New Yorkers are just too cool to care. She came and went a few times to tape different parts of the show but for the most part it was the two teams of two under the tents trying hard to peddle their treasures.

I had noticed a buff, bald guy following Lara around so later when he was standing next to me I asked if he was her bodyguard. I nearly cried when he whipped out a hairbrush and said he was her stylist and pulled my hair out of my scrunchie. He turned out to be a sweet guy, really nice and fun to chat with – and I’m not just saying that because he said I had fabulous hair.

By the time filming wrapped up at 3:00 pm, the contestants and crew were exhausted. As Lara announced the winners, the rain started coming down hard. It was a refreshing end to a long, hot day.

The Winner Is

And that’s kinda how today was. As I put a final coat of poly on some tables the sky opened up. I stepped out into the rain and thought about how cool it is that I get to do what I do. I may not be on tv shows or get paid to share my stories with you but the cool things I’ve gotten to do and the awesome people I’ve met just this summer more than make up for it.

UPDATE: This episode is scheduled to air April 2014. I’ll post a link when it’s available.

UPDATE: HGTV finally released this (ugh, well over a year later) to air on GAC this week! Be sure to tune in this Sunday,  August 17th at 8pm for the premiere of “Til death do us flip”.

  1. I am so glad you can finally stop holding your breath on this and shout it out loud!!!! I think YOU are 'fabulous people', Deanna, and I am SO glad that we got to meet while you were 'out West' – Thank your hubby and son again for being so patient, will you? They were really good sports as we gabbed on, and on, and on!

Now, we just need to get you on FMF as a CONTESTANT.
(And ah, about David…;0) .. LOL, kidding!….. sort of) ~Deb

  2. Finally- the cat's-out-of-the-bag! I think hanging-out is sometimes better then diving-in, BUT I hope they, someday, ask you to be part of a flippin'team 'cause I know you'd ROCK-IT girl!

    • Well they've got to come to Chicago because even when they were willing to bend the rules I wasn't willing to pay to fly out 3 times over! 😉

  3. I need a chair to sit in a corner and do nothing in my formal area. I'm going to start looking for chairs on the side of the road for rehab! Love the bodyguard comment…lol!!

    • Is the chair sitting in the corner doing nothing or does that describe you?? Make sure you have your sunglasses and ponytail holder so people think you're me when you snag the trash. 🙂
